Never say “at least I have a work/life balance”

I was speaking with a CEO last week who’s frustrated.

His board has just toned down his ambition. Told him to wait and see.

“The market is volatile right now; let’s put off the growth plans for a year.”

I could tell he was frustrated. But what he said was,

“I suppose it does make sense. And anyhow, my role gives me a lot of flexibility and a great work/life balance, so I can’t complain.”

❌ Er, NO!

“At least I have flexibility and a great work/life balance” is the lament of the bored and uninspired!

It’s the cry of the person who’s scared to leave their comfort zone.

And it’s based on a lie.

What’s the lie?

“It’s impossible to find something that will deeply inspire me and challenge me, whilst also retaining flexibility, relationships and fun.”

Who says your next level can’t be more impactful AND more exciting AND more flexible AND more balanced?

(You do. It’s your thinking. It’s not the market reality, it’s your personal growth challenge.)
